When did you really get into art?
I have always loved art and personal expression. From the time I was eleven years old and started playing the trumpet and shooting pictures with an old 35mm Argus range-finder camera. When I was 16 and could commute to, and attend jazz concerts and clubs, I found new intensity in combining my earlier interests and passions while listening to and shooting local Southern California jazz/studio musicians.
How did you come to the realization that you should try your luck at art on a more serious level?
Since I had started so early it was natural that some amount of so called, business opportunities would present themselves, which they did, and I could not afford to say no to good money. After attending a local Cal State for two years without a lot of direction the opportunity to attend the Pasadena, Art Center College of Design presented itself and I had found my collegiate direction. That lead me directly to my professional endeavors of the last twenty years.
How did you discover the particular style that you have?
I have been influenced by many and I have pursued a number of stylistic directions throughout my career. My most unique and personal creation was that of manifesting a montage technique that was born out of the practice of darkroom printing techniques applied in camera. In short, while starting my commercial photo studio in Portland, Oregon in 1988, at the beginning of the digital revolution, I managed to create interesting, complex and beautiful images for corporations that were reminiscent of more modern digital imagery with only the use of traditional film and the technique of painting with light in a controlled dark studio. I have enclosed a small selection of these images in my portfolio. Please keep in mind that these images were shot on one piece of transparency film with very long and involved exposures.
How would you describe your style?
Classical, whimsical and conceptual
Who or what influences your art?
Everything influences me, music, thoughtful people and all of the masters throughout history.
How often do you create a new piece?
It varies, but at this time I am trying to generate new portfolio or personal pieces at least twice a month. In addition to my two sons, which I consider an on going extremely active and engaging aspect of my work and life ;-)
What kind of success have you had with your art?
Well, I have been a working commercial photographer for twenty years and I have shot just about everything for large and small organizations nationally and internationally so, I guess I would have to say that I have had considerable success with my art.
What would be the ultimate goal for you and your art?
My current and ultimate goal is to continue to secure and complete projects over time and across geographical zones.
What do you see as an accomplishment in the way of art?
Making a living and finding joy in the execution of my process.
What kind of message, if any, do you try to convey through your art?
Sophistication, thoughtfulness and beauty
Sum up your art in one word.
Warmth
Any additional comments?
I remain hopeful that this digital technology will truly help to tie us all together while we move forward and outward beyond our perceptions. I think art can be a big contributor to this process of cultural evolution and connecting diverse people to healthy and functional ideas while contributing to mankind's overall character.
