ART

Gary Hogue

When did you really get into art?
My Dad bought me and himself sketchbooks when I was about 3 or 4 years old and he and I would sit and draw all kinds of things like our house and yard, trees, cars, animals...  He would try and draw my Mom but he wasn't very good at it (laughs to self,) and I stuck with cartoon characters and what not.  I never really stopped drawing but most of the time it was just for fun or to get me away from dealing with problems and crap in my life...

How did you come to the realization that you should try your luck at art on a more serious level?
I just eventually decided that if I wanted it bad enough that I should do it and do it with everything I had.  I was about 25 years old and one of my friends started telling me about the Joe Kubert School which focuses specifically on comic book and cartoon art which is a perfect fit for me.  I looked into that school and many others and even though I didn't decide to go there. I did finally decide that I needed to go to school and just started pushing myself to get heavily into my art again.

How did you discover the particular style that you have?
Well, when I was in junior high I started tracing Dick Tracy cartoons to get a better handle on the style they had.  Once I got comfortable with that I began drawing the Home Depot character freehand and started to really like drawing characters.  I would do variations to make it more into the type of characters that I wanted to draw and at the same time I became introduced to graffiti.  Through graff I really started learning a lot about designing my own characters and letters and I would draw, and draw, and draw.  Eventually I worked my way away from anyone elses style and have slowly developed a style of my own.  Its still a process of development for me and I can't say for sure if I have discovered "My Style" just yet.

How would you describe your style?
I guess surrealist cartoonish nonsense

Who or what influences your art?
I've been influenced by many of the well know graffiti artists like Daim, Seek, Shok, Ces, Cope2, Persue... then there are also master painters and artists that kind of influence everyone and I pull a ton of inspiration from the HipHop culture.  I love watching breakers and MCs and going to shows and battles.  I try to stay up on the new stuff thats going on and hope to create some animations that will be focused on the elements of breakin', graff, turntablism, and emceeing.

How often do you create a new piece?
I sketch every day but most of those I don't do anything with.  Some of the more refined ideas I will scan and color on the pc, I also paint but I'm a little slow with my paintings.  I'll paint something new maybe once every 3 or 4 months and often times I don't even finish them.  I'm starting to push myself harder to finish the old paintings and get working on new ones because painting is one of my favorite things to do.

What kind of success have you had with your art?
Small recognition with friends and family and a few others members of the art community.  I haven't really tried to sell much yet but my success so far has been in the development of my work and style.

What would be the ultimate goal for you and your art?
I wanna be famous!

What do you see as an accomplishment in the way of art?
Making a contribution to the Hip Hop community by raising awareness of the old skool and why the culture started in the first place.  I want to do it in a fun way through animation.

What kind of message, if any, do you try to convey through your art?
Be yourself, celebrate life and don't judge others.

Sum up your art in one word.
Fresh!

Any additional comments?
Always be yourself ;)
