ART

When did you really get into art?
As a child. Like most children I liked to draw, I just never stopped.

How did you come to the realization that you should try your luck at art on a more serious level?
It was never a matter of trying my luck. I grew up in a family of painters, craftsmen, writers and storytellers. And many family friends were artists as well. It seemed everyone I knew created stuff, and they encouraged that behavior in me. I do feel lucky to be making a living drawing, but I also believe you make your own luck. Ive shown my work to thousands of people, through dozens of personal interviews and targeted advertising. You cant just sit at home making cool pics and expect the world to notice.

How did you discover the particular style that you have?
From looking, thinking and drawing a lot. And by experimenting with different mediums until I found something that suited me. Actually, I enjoy working in a variety of ways. Id get bored doing the same old thing forever.

How would you describe your style?
Like winking.

Who or what influences your art?
Fried pies, county fairs and dirt track racing. And all the usual suspects.

How often do you create a new piece?
I always have several pieces in the works so its hard to say. One month I might complete 100 small works on paper. The next month I might create 4.

What kind of success have you had with your art?
I won first place in my ninth grade art contest. Minnie Pearl said: HowwDEE!, then handed me a check for twenty bucks.

What would be the ultimate goal for you and your art?
To remain curious and productive as an artist. To write and illustrate a good childrens book.

What do you see as an accomplishment in the way of art?
Art is the pursuit of the ultimate. And the results of that pursuit should be shared with everyone.

What kind of message, if any, do you try to convey through your art?
A positive one.

Sum up your art in one word.
Curious.

Any additional comments?
Though I paint and exhibit my fine art regularly, I enjoy making my living as an illustrator because it reaches people where they live...at home, work & play. Illustration is with us from birth to death: on birth announcements, birthday cards, tombstones, clothing, currency, textbooks, comic books, religious texts and dirty magazines. Its on the big screen and the little screens. Its everywhere. Its art for the people.
