ART

Chris Nelson

When did you really get into art?
Sometime around when I was born.  My family has always encouraged me.

How did you come to the realization that you should try your luck at art on a more serious level?
I didn't really realize that was an option.

How did you discover the particular style that you have?
I started by making a lot of really boring, awful paintings.  Then, when my comics got banned from the school newspaper, I thought maybe there was something to the subjects of those comics.

How would you describe your style?
Totally freaking awesome!

Who or what influences your art?
[insert long list of artists] I have a different sense of humor from a lot of people, so a lot of my paintings are about the way I see things.  Turns out, that's different from a lot of people, too.

How often do you create a new piece?
When I'm working in the studio, I have been known to do 2 paintings in a day.  It's a touch slower with oil paints.  I don't really have a space to paint right now, so I haven't been very productive lately.

What kind of success have you had with your art?
I pissed off my grandparents.  That was the most recent.  Good times, too.  But in high school I used to win a fair number of art awards and that sort of thing.  I got a trip out to Washington DC once for an award.

What would be the ultimate goal for you and your art?
I think it would be really awesome if people wanted to buy my paintings enough that I could dedicate more time to working on them.

What do you see as an accomplishment in the way of art?
I think any artist who has been listed as an influence on someone else's art is an accomplishment.  Especially if that person is famous or something.  Also, impressing people or getting a fun reaction out of them.  That's another good accomplishment.  Art is very rewarding.

What kind of message, if any, do you try to convey through your art?
I would really like people to try to fit themselves into my paintings and comics, and see what metaphoric (or more obvious) levels the paintings can represent their viewers.  Also, that I'm a funny guy.

Sum up your art in one word.
Super-toll!
