ART

When did you really get into art?
It's hard to say, I've always been really interested in art, but my career as an artist began taking off when I was just 17.  That's when I painted my first mural...it was for my grandmother and grandfather. She asked me to paint her one before I left for college; it was like she already knew the road I was going to take career wise...

How did you come to the realization that you should try your luck at art on a more serious level?
When I realized that people really enjoyed my art.

How did you discover the particular style that you have?
What particular style? I'm probably one of the only college educated artists who hasn't picked out one particular style, yet.  I don't plan on ever doing so.  Sometimes I try imitating other artists' styles just to see if I have it in me.

How would you describe your style?
Hmm...oil meets water? It's hard to say...I do a lot of sketchy like paintings, and then the next day I might incorporate mostly blending colors in a brand new painting.

Who or what influences your art?
A grade school teacher who laughed at my Cinderella drawing?!  I guess I gave Cinderella more of a booty than she should have had.  But, these days life, romance, contradictions, sarcasm seem to lay a path for creative freedoms.

How often do you create a new piece?
Every week or so...my apartment is a cluttered gallery right now of unfinished pieces, and I paint large...so it's like the Louvre threw up all over the place.

What kind of success have you had with your art?
Other than painting residential and business murals...I have an exhibit coming up in November at the Daily Grind, a small coffee shop here in Bridgewater, MA.  I will be starting a mural at ESPN in Boston.  I take exposure where I can get it and hope for the best.

What would be the ultimate goal for you and your art?
I'm not sure yet. What's the most any artist could hope for? ...I guess for me, it would be that more people noticed the value in original art. Too many people expect art for free, when realistically we artists give up most of our weeknights and weekends painting while most people are out having drinks with friends.  But then again, I'd rather be painting.

What do you see as an accomplishment in the way of art?
Making people happy, inspiring new artists, when people hear the name 'Candace Cotterman'...that they don't respond with a big 'who?' !

What kind of message, if any, do you try to convey through your art?
Acceptance, diversity, influences culture has on society.

Sum up your art in one word.
Evolving.
