MUSIC REVIEWS
10 Years - The Autumn Effect
Matt Jamison
Finally, a great new band comes along that’s not yet another retro 80’s band. Don’t get me wrong folks, I guess I find the current music industry trend of recycling mildly amusing. But of course I would much rather listen to music that sounds fresh, powerful, and new. With their scorching second release, 10 Years has become the unexpected favorite of my CD collection for the past few weeks. Basically this release is just damn good stuff.
The entire disc is very playable, and challenges the listener by using non-traditional melodies and time signatures. This music almost feels more like art due to its rich and compelling complexity. The creative musicians behind the band 10 Years can also write. The lyrics are quite catching, yet thankfully manage to avoid the obvious emotional clichs of the genre. Unfortunately I have not been able to find out much info about the musicians behind this album despite my efforts. Even the insert of this album itself leaves little information.
I must say that I have read quite a few whiny reviews slamming this band for attempting to imitiate A Pefect Circle. Although there is a definite APC influence, I would hardly consider it an imitation. If anything, the APC influence is one of the best things about this group. In a genre littered with 10,000 Nickleback post pop alternative clones, it is refreshing to see someone going in a different direction. True fans of APC will notice right away that this is not a copy-cat band.
But don’t believe everything you read in reviews folks. In fact I will take that concept a step further and apply that though to my own reviews. I invite each of you readers to challenge my musical opinions by listening for yourself and forming your own opinions. In fact I’ll put my money where my mouth is: I personally invite each and every one of you readers to email me with your feedback on this, or any other band I review present or past. I invite you to send your feedback, arguments, comments, and ideas anytime. You can reach me at theheadchange@hotmail.com
I’m not in this just to read my own typing here people. I sincerely want you to experience the best that modern music has to offer, and to help you to avoid purchasing albums that will leave you feeling dissapointed. The bands and performers I choose to review positively are hand-picked in an effort to help boost their exposure while giving you some great discs to add to your collection. On the other hand, I also solemnley pledge to negatively review any disc that leaves me with buyer’s remorce in hopes of saving your cash for musicians who truly deserve it. The bottom line is this: If you absolutely need to hear it I’d like to be the guy who brings it to you, right here on The Noyse.
